According to John Anthony West (rogue Egyptologist) in his documentary 'Magical Egypt' this symbol is more than simply 'sun', it's deeper meaning relates to the Earth's yearly orbit around the sun. Looks like a diagram to me ;)

Alchemical Symbol for Gold. The circumpunct is also the Egyptian hieroglyph for the sun.
